The Egyptian tradition sparked interests in the study of western esotericism. This impulse has not run its course. It holds some of us even now in romantic fascination. Occasionally books about this tradition have been written with a myriad collection of terms. Such topics are described under the heading as the Golden dawn. The material may appear mysterious as to its purpose. Students of the Egyptian tradition realize the importance of safeguarding the various systems of the physical body. The actual name Golden Dawn refers to the beginning of the Golden Age. This age is under the kingship of Varuna written in sanskrit as (वरुण). Physiologically this Varuna is the spinal fluid that surrounds the entire cerebro-spinal axis. The vedic description is that Varuna is the guardian of the western direction. This body of work makes sense when one combines the humors and the observed four temperaments. Upon reading this, one has a deeper sense of how mood is influenced and governed.
Insight into the ritual method can be learned by examining the Navajo sandpaintings used in healing and magic. The colors used and the placement of drawn objects follow the Hermetic principles. An important point to be aware is that the drawings themselves allow the gods to enter and leave. This is what is observed in performance art. During the steps from opening to the first various acts a climax is reached followed by a release and ultimately a close. This follows the same format in acts of healing. To prevent debasement and neglect the steps involved in the rituals once performed are broken up. That includes removal of the paintings. The participants must always enter with the conviction that the methods employed will be prepared and carried out properly. This means shifting of perspective of the participants.
To understand why mind is presented to develop in different stages is to gain the ability to work with the elements that exist in four different worlds. By the net sum collective of our thinking we are manipulating these elements. This indirect way results in the events that occur. Since the events are not immediate we have trouble accepting that our thoughts produce our experiences. The concept of four elements of air, water, fire, and earth are easily accepted. The ability to advance and begin to utilize these elements to achieve your ideas, needs, and wants. This abstractness results in a barrier. The elements are actually operating in worlds of different dimensions. To gain the power of the mind to shift into these worlds a series of descriptive words were chosen. These include a land without life, a land with plants, a land with plants and animals, and a land with plants, animals, and people. These words describe different states that the mind can achieve. Each of the lesser worlds support the higher worlds. The advanced worlds result in complex thinking. This can include the powers of organization, reason, inference. The Navajo traditions stress how the four worlds are used by the mind.
These worlds are designated as colors. The first world is black. This is called Nihodilhil, the second world is blue. Here the form of spirit exists. The wearing of Turquoise relates to this world. This is called Nihodootlizh, the third world is yellow. This world is the present 3 dimensional world. This is called Nihaltsoh, the fourth world is white (Glittering). Silver metal is used to represent the white world. This is called Nihalgai. In the first world we began to grow and gained greater awareness and greater intelligence as we progressed. We were able to learn that the Holy People would frequently refer to us as their children. We thus were able to understand that we were their offspring. With this growth of mental power we realized that there were Four other beings of awareness that were not claimed by the Holy people as their children. These beings would eventually become vegetation, insect, bird, and animals. This creates a distinction of different mental functions. This means conclusions based on false premises, harmful fantasies, malicious thinking, hate, lust, ill will, and brooding, deception, lies and false statements. These are not the offspring of the Holy ones.
The Sacred number four
The Navajo emphasize four in their activities and make effort to use the number in their thoughts. This is so to remind the mind and the self-conscious as they stray far from the source that they must always involve the four worlds that contribute to the individual equally. This means our lower self is actually composed of four beings. The Spiritual mind, The Emotional mind, The Mental mind, and the Physical mind. Not all minds appear at an event. One of the three may dominate. This is a misfortune. The solution to a problem can be readily achieved if each mind were strengthen. Never-the-less the growth and development of all four is essential to achieve knowledge and awareness. The Physical mind evolves maps through senses. Love of self pleasures are derived from the senses. The Emotional mind is concerned with feeling based on experience. The Mental mind deals in logic and reason. The Spiritual mind provide love of others and feelings of good will. Higher worlds of existence are accessible. According to the Navajo description the inhabitants of the lower worlds enter the higher worlds sequentially. There is a fifth world and of course worlds beyond that one. The Diné Bahané is instructive as the Navajo work allows access to the other creation manuscripts. All of these works provide in poetic allegory the initiation, growth, and development of the mind. If difficulties arise attempts were employed involving sand painting, prayers, dancing with costume. If the performance could be examined the images would contain stages of the creation mythology. This would be natural as the creation describes the various steps of the mind infolding in us.
The Tree of life diagrams outline in topological form the different worlds in the creation myths. The Navajo and the Qabbalah systems are equivalent because both are describing the same phenomena. The diagram above shows each "world" or tree of life can be drawn as a series of interlocking circles. This drawing shows that the circles share the property that the origin of the next circle states at the circumference of the previous circle. Within every circle a tree of lifer may be inserted. Such a diagram has an interesting property. If the arabic number nine were drawn using the same procedure with 12 circles the figure of a fetus can be traced out with Aries as the head, the heart as Leo, the thighs as Sagittarius, and the feet as Pisces. This relationship shows how the different bodies are passed along the various portions of the tree as the soul continues on its journey. The celestial night sky is partitioned into four regions. They are identified as Earth, Air, Water, and Fire. This same system is employed in drawing the tree of life. Therefore a series of four intersecting circles can be used to describe the
This fours worlds map to systems in the night sky as well as the physiological systems of living systems.
The four temperaments that enter our persona. They come through the lower worlds. By interfering with the needs of the lower mind and the requirements of the higher mind these develop into forms created by templates provided by the lower mind. At any time one of these four types may appear to dominate. The more vocal characteristics display themselves. If the changing patterns dictated by the law of 7 are not observed the tendency is to describe one as being of only one type.
The extreme conditions allow a way to understand the types of temperaments, It must be kept in mind that we do experience all of them in different amounts at different times through a single day or night. Even when we experience a sleeping dream or waking vision our interpretation and response is effected by which temperament dominates. The humors introduced into the physical body provide us with a wide spectrum of emotions. Little is discussed as to what mechanisms are involved in how the humors are regulated and stored in the body. If too much of one humor is introduced. How then is it removed from the body? We do know that there does exists a balancing system to maintain a proper amount of each humor. A larger version of this system is represented in celestial maps of the constellations. On this scale emotional changes can be perceived to be described by an analogy with weather changes. This will be explained further, but first let us consider the four types of temperaments observed.
The Choleric persona results from an excess of yellow bile. The dominant element is fire. Such observed traits will be passion. The desire to lead and take charge. Higher logic is suppressed. A "hot headed" nature and ease to become angry just for the sake of being angry is often observed. An unpleasant situation or the recalling of a forgotten event makes one addicted to the release of yellow bile. Long term addiction results in the attempt to seek out situations where the need to "blow up" will occur just for the rush experiencing the increase of the yellow bile into the systems of the physical body. The nerve systems involved in connecting the etheric body to the physical body experience this feeling of over all wellbeing and become unbalanced. The Choleric persona when tempered can be useful to neutralize attacks, or to correct harmful behavior.
The Melancholic temperament is produced when black bile is introduced into the physical body. The dominant element is earth. This condition produces a high degree of organization and logical reasoning. The melancholic will become angry easily (the introduction of yellow bile) if their structured patterns, which they devised themselves, are disturbed. Communication can be difficult as verbal expression is difficult. The positive traits are high degrees of creativity. The negative traits are suspicion. They are easy to become introverted. The reason why in the picture above shows that in the lower right corner the Alembic is broken indicates the spiritual connection is shut off. The Alembic is the Chaldean metaphor for the self. A broken vessel prevents the alchemical process from occurring. Conditions of prolong Melancholy produces a material world where thoughts are not distinguished from physical objects. The search for historical persons meant only to describe mental functions are an impulse derived from too much black bile. Prolong Melancholy is dangerous. The higher worlds cannot motive the lower worlds and a condition where the physical body dominates exists.
The Phlegmatic condition occurs when an excess of Phlegm is present in the physical body. A feeling of calmness is achieved when Phlegm is introduced into the body as a dominant humor. The chief element is water. This temperament appears to make behavior steady, easy going, loyalty among relationships is enduring. A relaxed state and feeling of well being is enjoyed. Excessive Phlegm in the negative polarity produces laziness, unwilling to change. This temperament makes a persona appear Stoic. A choleric persona will be at odds with a Phlegmatic persona.
The Sanguine temperament are open to impulsiveness. The element that dominates is Air. Those experiencing too little of the other humors will experience and overdriving force from the nervous system. Friendships do not last long but may continually be broken off and reformed. Changeability in partners and attitudes is common. A persona with a large Choleric and Sanguine polarity will appear as demanding information, but then refuse the same information. An observer will consider that two persons are existing in the same physical body, when in fact it is only how the humors are changing concentration. The movement is affected by rhythms. An excessive Sanguine states makes persona hard to pin down. Easy to anger, easy to seek love, easy to change projects without completing anything. The desire to change ideas, and travel suddenly can occur. This influence can involve breathing , a sequence of thoughts that repeat through a cycle.
The famous pentagram shown in some spoofs of rituals is derived from the tree of life by an inversion of the left and right pillars of the tree. This is necessary as the tree diagram is a reference to our body. The view from the tree is facing the back with the spinal bone and chord facing the viewer. The five pointed star is that of a person with the face in front of the viewer. The head is marked as spirit. The right hand is marked as water. The left hand is marked as air. The left foot is marked earth. The right foot is marked fire. Why the elaborate markings becomes clear when it is explained in order to experience a change from one world into another the ritual must include an alchemical transmutation associated with the process. This the actual reason why ritual has fallen out of practice. A procedure endured merely for the sake of doing it will not result in the desired out come. The Temperaments are associated with beings that exist in the world of elements. No one can detect a presence of such a dweller. Therefore simulacum is employed. You may know them by the names of Undines, Sylphs, Salamanders, and Gnomes. Collectively they are called the elementals. The Salamanders are constrained to the domain of fire. The Undines are part of the world of water. The Sylphs belong to the domain of air. The Gnomes belong to earth. None of these beings can exist outside their assigned element. Gnomes cannot enter fire. Dion Fortune had some interesting words about these elementals. She spoke of them in her Applied Magic text. The description of these entities as having a physical body is misleading. Although providing such a figure with a personality and a costume is what we frequently do with drawings, toys, pets, friends in the form of a nickname. We actually are taking part in an occult process of impressing our personality and life force into the thought form. According to Dion Fortune these "Elementals are thought-forms generated by coordinated systems of reactions that have become stereotyped by constant and unchanging repetition." It is this constant repetitive attention of our mind that provides the necessary energies to keep their form. If many communities are involved than these entities become potent. The application of providing a movie every year with the same characters will impress the necessary vibrations to keep the entities present in the mind of the people that have contact with this movie. The use of merchandise is useful to maintain the image. This can be as pictures on a shirt, a poster, visual ads, toys, and actors appearing in the costumes of these characters whenever the movie is not shown.
Since elementals lack any of the features that the physical senses can deal with art has been called to the task to represent the energy signatures. The statues in the above images show in the order right to left the following elements: The right most figure represents Fire. This is followed by Water, then Air and finally the left most figure represents Earth. The names associated with these statues are Saraswati, Fire, Far right. Mahakali, Water, Mahalakshmi, This is associated with Air. The far left is Maheshwari, This is associated with Earth. You will notice that every statue has four arms and four hands each holding specific tools. Each arm is in turn linked to an element.
Artus Wolffort represents the same elements using the human figure. See if you can figure out which element is which by the tools each figure holds.
This carving of a Salamander in a fire has am important part in physiological control. The alchemists use this image to aid in the conscious assistance in the formation of the philosopher's stone. Since the various salts that make up the stone are difficult to focus upon the metaphor of this animal being produced in the flame is used to focus one's thoughts to the task. This allows the understanding of how to use mind to create form. The image of the animal allows the abstract concept of 12 salts to take the function of being consciously put into motion without the requirement to understand each underlying veil of a mechanism. As the intellect evolves the understanding of how a mixture of salts precipitating in the fourth ventricle, located in the back of the head, leads to higher powers will occur. Never-the-less the operator can achieve the effects by the use of the images produced by the artist.
Which I wish to point out. Interest in Magic has witness a popularity. Before you begin to advise your friends as well as yourselves it is important to point out. When Magic texts were prepared interest was low. The knowledge was meant to be worked upon by the operator into stages. With an increase interest it is necessary to fill in an important gap. Before you begin waving around your wands. Always remember how the points of the star you are instructed to image before you are related to your own body systems. Each point of the five pointed star is associated with blood, digestion, spinal fluid, nerve transmission, and bone and muscle. Although a text will advise you to open the pentagram and close the pentagram nothing is mentioned as to why these operations are necessary. For every system of the body there is a guardian and a deity to in turn protect that deity. In medical terms the guardian and deity are replaced by the words organs and systems. In the case of spinal fluid for example along the surface area of nerves are glands that respond to this fluid. In the literature of myths these glands are called Nymphs. To conduct your magical operations you are involving a link between your conscious states and you bodily functions.
The invoking and eventual banishing ritual ensures the proper hierarchy and functioning to be maintained. When shamans perform a ritual they are performing the same operations. Following the invoking they perform healing and repair operations and end by banishing to close the vital systems. In magic your always want to respect the body. Remember the ritual of taking a substance is metaphor. All operations are performed only with mind.
