We seldom think of breathing as the determining factor in what makes a work of Art a masterpiece. When viewers participate in a performance their role is not understood. The participants breathing patterns change as they watch the artists engage in their craft. As the artist places paint on the canvas the respiration changes. Is there a record of the breathing pattern? The view of a painting done years ago has a different effect upon the viewer. Yet the question why paintings made during the renaissance have a different effect upon the eyes than paintings made in later eras goes unanswered. We have a clue and that is when watching performance Art we have a much different sensation that can be experienced not by a single person but by a group. Notice that freshly made Art has a direct experience on the human nervous system and pulmonary system. When paint was supplied to artists in tubes and spray cans the luster and desire on the canvas was lost. Artists began to search for ways to aid motion into their designs. This motion brought back a return to the life of the painting. The application of patterns in the brush strokes has an impression on the Mind. It is not the image that people are thrilled with. The effect of the direction of the brush and the rhythm as a the brush touched the surface. The painting is a record of the Artist’s breath. The ability to capture meditation on a canvas. These symbols seem to point to the concept of breath and motion. Breathing is where it is at. These patterns of long and short lines refer to different periods of inhalations and exhalations. During Tai Qi movements the breathing pattern changes to facilitate the shifting of weight as the arms and legs move. This is so as the nerves require energy to perform their work. There are several art forms where knowledge of how breathing patters affects the performance would be practical. These include drumming, Cello, Dance, Painting, and Tai Qi. The effects on the nervous system by the lungs is not understood because neuro endocrinological effects are difficult to measure and interpret in living systems. Students of Tai Qi have speculated if the movements could be captured by painting what image would be produced? An important advantage to this methodology is that it provides a new Art form. This will allow breath to be an active participate in a performance. A way to understand this effect is by experiencing the feeling of a temperature change on the skin when listening to music. The phenomena is called Frission. The feeing of a shiver. The change in musical dynamics can cause this to occur in the listener. What happens to the performer? Do they also experience this sensation at the same moment as the listener? Using the hands and feet as probes we can create images and use the body as a source of music, color, and texture. This captures a moment on canvas. Learning the silent language of breath is a requirement to enlightenment in the next century.
Such a vital Artist tool has been long neglected.
