People are described as a riddle. When we meet and greet it takes time to understand a person. Why does this happen? Are we not constant in attitude? How much of our behavior depends on the conditions that surround us? To meet someone is the actual process of solving a riddle. When you deal with a person you do not experience a single person but a combine synthesis of 12 bodies. This will sound strange. With the physical eye only one body is perceived. Then comes the riddle ask an artist why they decided to paint a flower all in red. The answer will be unclear. When we create something we are at a loss as to explain how we did it. This phenomena is repeated on a daily basis. Ask someone to describe how they solved a geometry problem, or how to prepare a delicious meal. The mental process involved in creation is different than the process of analysis. This provides a clue as to how our minds are designed. Autumn is a season in the cyclic process of thought. This cycle is associated with a temperament called Melancholia. In order to understand the mind we have to understand plants. There is a deep connection. The names of the anatomy of the nervous system use terms from agriculture. In Autumn is when the fruits of the harvest are obtained from the tree. The process of creating requires the aspects of attention and devotion. A full amount of concentration is necessary. This introspection is the hallmarks of Melancholia. Part of the joy in partaking in performance Art is in trying to guess or figure out what will the final image be. We are watching the birth of an idea from someone’s head. One would like to know how this is possible. Neuroscience wants to understand this as well. The clue to what the artist is doing lies in the alchemical key called Saturn. The symbol involves a sickle and a cross. The meaning of the cross involves respiration. The other part relates to the medulla at the base of the brain. Here is where new connections must be made whenever a new skill or technique is developed. This can be from learning to play a new musical score. Painting a masterpiece or cooking a meal. Any process involving the bringing into the physical world demands new nerve connections to be made. The correct connections have to be made. Therefore effort is required. We may think there is something that makes an Artist differ from other people. That is not true. We have all been provided the necessary tools. The development of Art requires the Will from the Ego to overcome the inertia of the Earth. Notice again the relationship of agriculture. Earth in this sense is not the course form of rock and soil. The finer manifestation of Earth involves the mental concepts of organization and materialism. If we can imagine the home that we want to live in we must work from the picture in our mind. That is the approach to using the mental gift you have been given. The more mundane approach is to strive to work untenable goals. The thought is by wealth it will happened. This is the strictly material trap. By way of forgetting you have a mind you will find yourself unable to cope with your will. The desire to obtain things will haunt your mind and make you feel a prisoner of the emotions. Rather than in reality you are in control of your mind. The ability to assume bodily control requires again the proper use of the Saturn key. You must firmly decide what you want to do! When this is determined the ideas will flow. They are of course not from the material world. The realm of ideas is in the world of spirit. Here anything is possible and is not limited by material concepts. It is always important to realize that the things around you came from the Mind. Therefore you yourself can devise new items. This is the most important lesson that one can learn from the attributes of Melancholia. A person in control of the mind will utilize the important aspects of all the mental tools at their disposal and not be overcome by their powerful nature. When an idea or process is worked out we are unable to explain how we came up with the idea. Thoughts tend to emerge in a downward fashion from the Mind to the Body. To explain our methods would require another way of thinking. This shows that we can learn some aspects of the mind. The way ideas form is described as the Lightning path. [The lightning path describe. This is how ideas and thoughts evolve from the mind into a physical manifestation.] Attempts to explain our method would require more effort and hence more ideas to outline our method to another person. This shows another aspect of out Mind. We cannot share our mental approach with another person. Our way of thinking is private. The different parts of the human consciousness can be described as geometric spheres on a diagram called the Tree of Life. These are like fruits on the tree. Whenever we have a thought it has passed through or was modified by each of these fruits. [The various aspects that make up the Mind. The nerves are grouped according to levels in the body. The Spirit domain is the head, The Soul domain is the heart and stomach, The personality is the kidneys.] These fruits can be combined into three triangles. Here the fruits partake in making up our mind. At the top a triangle represents our highest thoughts. We call this the spirit domain. This is the region of the head. The middle triangle makes up the heart and upper chest region. The lower triangles makes up the personality. This results in producing our character. Because our Mind has the functioning of a tree our personality can evolve as the Tree grows. A simple example can demonstrate a person involved in constructing delicate equipment will require much concentration. This is an aspect of being Melancholia. Lets suppose after work this person is very determined to have their own way. This would be a strong willed characteristic. We would think this person is unpleasant to be with. He is very Choleric. When this person returns home the behavior is entirely different. The person is easily going and slow to anger. People around this person would consider the person to lack ambition and drive. This is a phlegmatic characteristic. Now we learn something else about the mind. The ability to change is possible. A person is never the same. The evolution of the mind is a requirement of the soul’s journey. [Description of the components that contribute to our personality. This is at the Kidney level. These are Ego, Astral body, Etheric body, and Physical body.] Even though this contributes to what we can perceive as emotions these triangles cannot be detected. The nerves involved in this area are in the kidneys and lower abdomen. What we perceive as personality is a combination of four extreme cases. In actuality people experience different degrees at different times throughout the day and night. The tree has 12 fruits that can contribute to our persona. Yet only the six of the 12 make the strongest impact. The other six farther from the body have less an effect on personality. Again this shows something about how our minds are designed. This is also why we often cannot explain how we come up with our ideas. As the source of creativity lies beyond where personality is created. Since we have one physical body the others have to instill and insist that their whims be carried out. This contributes to stress. The lowest fruits comprise Physical body, Etheric body, Astral body, and the ego.One of these four members can take dominance over the others and manifest as a temperament. Case 1 Melancholic Temperament The physical body dominates. Case 2 Phlegmatic Temperament The etheric or life body dominates. Case 3 Sanguine Temperament The astral body dominates Case 4 Choleric Temperament The ego dominates To keep it simple one can use this list as a guide to understand which of the four members are dominating. It actuality two or three members may try to form an alliance to overcome the other members. The objective is for the members on your tree of life to cooperate and work together. This provides the necessary stabilization. Understanding the meaning behind the Temperament names is really important as this takes away the mystery and ignorance behind the study of the mind and body. The names actually point to the circulatory organs and glands where these members are able to express their action. In fact it points towards a theory to explain their mechanism where in fact emotion emerges from the body. Melancholia The physical body dominates and the body is the site of the expression. Pain and feeling of despondency. The danger is that a state of prolonged Melancholia cannot be maintained. The other members of the Tree must work to impress their views into the body as a team effort. Single participation only leads to more problems. Phlegmatic Dominated physically by the glands. Apathy, dullness Sanguine Astral body is expressed by the nerves. Here the activity is dominated by the nervous system. Large fluctuations are present. Thoughts and emotions will change constantly. Only the Ego can rein in this activity. The nervous system activity can only be restrained by the blood. Without the aid of the blood illusions and hallucinations will occur. This is observed in Anemic conditions. Choleric Dominated by the blood system. This is because the Ego is expressed in the circulatory system. This provides a forcefulness of will. [The Tree of Life draw in a different way. Each of the 12 worlds (Fruits) are represented.]
This artist chose to draw the Tree of Life in a horizontal format. You will observe that all 12 of the fruits or bodies are working together in harmony. Here all 12 of the members are shown. The work may not be familiar as such but in Art the Tree of Life appears in many forms. There is a mathematical reason for this phenomena. It relates the senses to the consciousness. This particular image is well known. It has been reproduced many times. Yet the content and meaning have long been forgotten. We strive to live in the physical world even though our thoughts do not. The figure being carried represents the soul. The Gold represents the spirit. This is why the flame appears at the very top. This is the spiritual light. In alchemy the metal gold is associated with the spiritual state where thoughts first emanate. The symbol of light means the connection with the process of thinking. During our lives the Temperaments will change as the various members of the Tree of Life grow and evolve. This aspect allows for the conscious mind to overcome the automatic nervous system in the struggle for control of the physical body. People often fall into a trance or feel in a helpless state unable to cope with what the sense physically is impossible to change. The methods of Art, Music, Tai Qi, Yoga, Alchemy, and other systems were utilized to aid in this goal.
