Fire was represented in Art as a long pole with a flame on one end. This is displayed in the picture above. One can imagine the ash pole as being a metaphor for fire as it can be used as a tool to stoke a fire without being burned. The best way to understand the metaphor for the will in thought is to study how the picture changed though the years. The flame eventually was replaced by metal and the pole became a spear. Here we notice the symbol of fire is held by the figure above. Here the pole has been replaced by a spear. This painting was performed by Lucas van Falchenburg around 1594. The title is called Der Turmbau zu Babel. The tower of Babel. The figure is unique as the two elements fire and earth are represented by the spear and the shield. The shield refers to earth. These can be thought of as will and organization of your thought forms. You will see above that only one figure wears a hat. The other four figures do not. The hatless surround the odd one. This is a representation of the five elements. The spirit, fire, water, air, and earth. The image is actually showing the process involved in creating thought. Unbeknown to many the use of the minor arcana in the tarot system refers to the angels found in the thrones. These angels make up aspects of the will and are used in thought for modifications. To say you have a will is not enough. You must be specific. That is why the thrones are a part of the mind. They come after the five elements of spirit, fire, water, air, and earth. These thrones are envisioned as a mandala under neath the five pointed star that represents the five elements. The thrones can be represented in pictorial form using the minor arcana as a wheel. In the case of the five wands pictured above the two angels of the throne are Vahuaih and Yelauel. These names are used by the higher self to initiate the will to act. The actual vibration of the names has the desired effect. It has been observed that regions of the brain become activated when these sounds are produced as tones on a music scale. The length of the wand can vary. The picture above has two examples. One in the left hand and one on the table. A wand or baton can easily have a flame one both ends. This provides information that different stages are involved in the process of will and this is the exact reason why the designs differ. The image above shows many examples of depicting fire in a painting. You will notice even the central figure wearing the long robe also has a wand.
