We have a misconception about what the abyss actually is. Literature sources speak of this region in murky fashion. The abyss can be found in Mystical literature as well as in fantasy texts, Authors of mythology mentioned the word often associated with creation, and of course occult works touch on it. Even though there are a wide list of areas for the student to choose from. Finding any information appears to require a personal visit to the abyss. A perusal of current examples can be seen in the presentation above. Artists have made a variety of images to represent the Abyss. The range of images reflects what little we know. It is knowledge and the wisdom that separates us from the Adept. Only when you are prepared can you enter the Abyss. Therefore change is a prerequisite. J. R. R. Tolkien used the word in one of his works. The mind has trouble distinguishing products of its own creation. The word fantasy for fiction demonstrates just how powerful your mind truly is. A word of caution is needed for the author may not intend to teach occult knowledge by borrowing a word from that subject. After all it is also possible the author did not know of the source of the word. Lets examine how the word is used by the author. Gandalf speaks " You cannot pass, 'he said. The orcs stood still, and a dead silence fell. 'I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the flame of Anor. You cannot pass. The dark fire will not avail you, flame of Udûn. Go back to the Shadow! You cannot pass.' " " A blinding sheet of white flame sprang up. The bridge cracked. Right at the Balrog's feet it broke, and the stone upon which it stood crashed into the gulf, while the rest remained, poised quivering like a tongue of rock thrust out into emptiness. With a terrible cry the Balrog fell forward, and its shadow plunged down and vanished. " " He staggered and fell, grasped vainly at the stone, and slid into the abyss. 'Fly, you fools!' he cried, and was gone. " Title: The Fellowship from the ring, Author J. R . R. Tolkien, Year Published 1954, Publisher Allen& Urwin The concept of falling is implied by Tolkein. Do the thoughts we receive from Kether "fall" as the emanation from Binah crosses over to Chesed? From the diagram nothing appears to be slipping, sliding, or falling. The idea may come from where the abyss is located. There is of course no information of a sensation of falling. Where then does this idea come from? The word Abyss is used in diagrams of the Tree of Life. One feature can be understood at a glance. The top triangle consisting of Kether, Chockmah, and Binah are distinguished from the remaining seven circles below. These circles are also called Sephiroth. These are worlds themselves. Yet they differ from the the three of the highest triangle. The Greek word for the Sephiroth of the first triangle is Logos (λόγος). This is called the supernal triangle. To reach this triangle from the lower seven Sephiroth requires crossing the abyss. Aischylos (Αἰσχύλος), the author of the work entitled Prometheus Bound provides knowledge of the celestial heavens. Each of the figures below correspond to the actors of the work. To understand this one must consider 48 constellations. Each tradition will have a unique number of these star fields. How the stars arrange provide a energy. This energy provides a force. The choice of the picture is determined by events on earth, not by events above. This is a misunderstanding about astrology. The star known as the pole star is called The Sun. Where this sun is located during its revolution maps out the seven lords of Eternity. Each constellation confers a portion of the physical body. The constellation The constellation of Hercules shares a center in the prostate (male) and the uterus (female). These organs connect to centers of Draco (the dragon) and Lyra. The constellation of the harp called Lyra has a center in the brain. The structure resembles strings of a harp and is located just above the fornix. Ursa minor has a center in the spleen. It is important to understand that the lords are powers. They appear differently in nature as they approach upon rays. Using the Khemet tradition (1) Dark is Sut, (2) Light is Adult Horus, (3) The power of breath is Shu, (4) Water is Nnu (Hapi), (5) Earth is Tuamutef (Seb), (6) Fire is Khabsenuf, (7) Blood is Child Horus. How the universe is arranged. The structure of the celestial sphere reveals that these 48 constellations are partitioned into four sectors. Each sector or zone contains 12 of these force maps. Remember that the constellations are fields of energy that are able to provide forces. You experience these forces acting throughout the centers operating in you. The viewpoint is from The City. This is why the name Babylon is the occult meaning for body. To view the stars requires a frame of reference so that the viewer is observing the body represented in the heavens. Therefore the description requires a northern latitude orientation. In order to understand this information it is required to study the trajectory of a helix. The stars and planets follow this motion when viewed from the city. Diagrams unfortunately neglect the city view and show the patterns viewed from the outside. This does not preserve the helical shape resulting in confusion. The position of the observer is important. A helical trajectory. If the numbers on the vertical axis were altitude then this would show a star or planet rising on a helical path. This would be a star-rising, or planet-rising. If the arrow was reversed, then the diagram would show a star-setting, or planet-setting. Note the result of a helical path. Look at the lemniscate traced out by the tangent line between the planet on the helical line. This is very important to realize how this figure forms and why. A helical current traveling along the spine as depicted by any of the the energetic nerve channel called ida, Pingala, and Sushumna. Source: Discussion with Teachers, Author: Rudolf Steiner, Publisher Anthroposophic Press, Publication year 1997 In order to understand why the caduceus appears on statues, paintings and drawings the tracing of the lemniscate must by the parts of the caduceus must be identified. This allows you to learn how these lemniscates form about you. This pattern is called the life power and is observed on the tarot key of Strength, and the key of the Magician. This shows a helical current is established in the central figures depicted. Details are so important. Each design, from color, to objects all refer to you. This even includes the type and number of flowers, and leaves as well as their location. All provide information on neuroscience. The celestial sphere actually needs to be understood in terms of the different regencies. They are names as Sky, Ocean, Earth, and Fire. In the case of Fire this maybe described as rivers. This description depends on the tradition you are working with. The patterns formed are assign to each of these different regions. The assignments depend on whether the constellation is helical rising or setting with respect to a zodiac constellation. Such knowledge can be found in the presentations of a given tradition. This is how the information contained in the work is mapped to a series of constellations. A given paranatellon can contain one, two, three, or several constellations. Some constellations can appear in more than one paranatellon. The decision to include or exclude a constellation depends on its helical trajectory with respect to a zodiac reagent. This also means that the constellation does not have to be close by to the zodiac member. This makes a paranatellon assignment different from a decan assignment. Early traditions assigned 48 images. They are not distributed evenly throughout the celestial sphere. The central band consists of 12 zodiac constellations. The remaining 48 - 12 = 36 constellations are obtained from 21 constellations in the northern hemisphere and 15 constellations in the southern hemisphere. This means 21 + 15 = 36 by combining the populations of the northern and southern provides the remaining 36. By understanding how the star pattern arrangement contributes to the centers in the physical body provides knowledge on how the organs and hence how thoughts interact. Sector 1 This is known as the circle of apparition. This means that the constellations at the northern pole never appear to the viewer to set. They are always present regardless of the season. The regent of this land is called the Sky god. The constellations labelled Cepheus, and Cassiopeia are not as they might seem. In each tradition they take on the desired personalities of the operator. The Greek Mysteries reveal that the king and queen of heaven are (Uranus) Ouranos (Οὐρανός) and Gaia (Γαῖα). These positions are the same for the titan rulers. The powers of the titans are Ophion (Ὀφίωνος) and Eurynome (Εὐρυνόμη). The images selected are for the needs of the traditions being used. The symbols of the drawings describe the attributes of the powers. Sector 2 This is known as the circle of occultation. This is the zodiac. Due to the fact that the view from babylon makes the constellations appear to rise and set provides a deeper meaning to this region. Just as animals swim in the water and may surface the sector of animals is called the Great Sea of Life. The influence on psychic phenomena is a result of this water connection. The regent of this land is called the Sea god. Sector 3 This is known as the Abyss. The constellations viewed from Babylon do not include these hidden fields. They cannot be seen in the northern hemisphere. A hidden view implies we are looking at an internal world. In the Greek Mysteries the place of Hades and Tartarus refers to regions of the physical body. The regent of this place is called the Earth god. Knowledge of this region is so sacred it was often not revealed in some traditions. This was placed upon those seeking the true path. The above diagram shows how the four regencies are assigned to a zodiac. Once these quadrants are fixed then the paranatellons can be assigned. Source Restored New Testament, by James Morgan Pryse, Publisher James Morgan Pryse, 1914 The constellation called the serpent held by Prometheus is a representation of the Devine Fire. Sector 4 This is the regency of the fire god. The constellations must be assigned. You will find in various traditions this area is omitted. The structures must be built by the adept. No informations comes from without. This must be achieved by the individual. The images above are pointing to the answer. After Hades there is Tartarus. To understand what these words means consider Sisyphus. He is condemned to roll a massive boulder up the top of a steep incline, only to watch it roll down and repeat the process. This is the process of the pulmonary system. The air inhaled by the lungs drives the blast furnace. Air is needed for the processing of food. The lungs therefore are a part of Tartarus. Another member of Tartarus you perhaps know full well by the name Tantalus. Listen to how Tantalus is to be punished. "Tantalus was to stand in a pool of water beneath a fruit tree with low branches. If he hungered for the fruit the attempt to reach for the fruit would cause the branches to raised high enough to be beyond his grasp. How about drink? Should he bend down to cup his hand for some water. The pool of water would recede. This makes a drink impossible. Over his head towered a threatening stone. This means that Sisyphus was nearby. The information provided describes the portion of the body called the diaphragm. The Greek Mysteries introduce the student to the portions of the physical body. This is Babylon. 12 constellations map to Hades and 12 constellations map to Tartarus to complete the 48 constellations that combine to describe YOU. The father of Sisyphus is Aeolus (Αἴολος). He is keeper of the winds. The winds are the nerves responsible for transmitting emotions. This information points toward the organs of the body. How does working with your mind and personality depend on your organs? More importantly why are vital organs present in places called Hades and Tartarus? This knowledge demands a greater respect for yourself and a way to understand what Hades refers to. It is said that the ruler of Hades has dominion over all the metals in the earth. These metals are what the alchemist refer to. They can be found deep inside the mountains. These of course refer to the nerve centers. The solar plexus is one of them and is called Tin. The astrological representation of the Abyss reveals that an anatomy text holds the answer to the physical contents of the Abyss. The figure named Orion is related to the nervous system. The constellations of Lupus, Canis Minor, and Major relate to control of the limbs, lungs, and precious organs by the nerves from the cerebellum and cerebrum. Perhaps some of this information can be revealed without letting out too many secrets. Pay attention to the rather attractive figure on the lower left. This is one of Aries decans. The observation that this constellation is the southern hemisphere and hence a member of the Abyss is very insightful. Alchemist say that their antimony is submerged and has to be raised. This implies that the substance is present in a lower state and must be converted to a higher state. The constellation named Cetus has a center operating in the Thalamus. It is the alchemical antimony that has transferred over into the idea of enhancement. The Egyptian texts describe antimony with the thalamus by representing the hemisphere of the brain as an eye. Philosophical antimony is far different as it has profound effects upon personality. Other members in the abyss include the stomach and small intestine. Therefore the vagus nerve system is also present in the southern hemisphere as the the hydra water snake and the solar plexus where the solar deity is born. This is represented by 13 stars that are described as a container. Dion Fortune pointed out that normal human consciousness cannot cross the abyss. We might at first find it odd that personality resides in Mount Olympus just above the kidneys. This is so close to where the sacrum is located. This of course is where earth is. The scared fire was taken from the olympian gods and given to the dwellers of the earth by prometheus. Despite the closeness, barriers and guardians do exist to prevent such intermingling. Their nature requires knowledge of yourself. Rational accounts of the origins of Myths are useless as they fail to provide knowledge of the physiologic function. It is this source that explains their is something more to astrology than how it is currently employed today. In order to learn what types of images are observed as the stars undergo their helical motions we need to know about the motion of the moon. This falls to Io, she is the lunar soul of the mind. All the characters in Prometheus Bound are a part of us. They are the forces that operate in nature. Io has a counter part in the search for Osiris. This is the moon traveling the zodiac when full. She is the faithful wife of Osiris. The flora and fauna, the various actors met during the epic are the images formed from the resulting paranatellon. This is the actual source for the story imagery. This is the correct way the myths were designed. The knowledge contained in the Myths are complex exercises for organ development. As Io makes her journey crossing the Mediterranean sea from Italy unto Egypt the moon must transit likewise from Virgo to Libra [The Fire Altar] to Scorpio. This is where the confusion from history begins as myth ends when in fact it was always the pictures created in the starry night sky. This is also why energy fields exist in the building blocks known as the constellations. The pictures that are made as they arise while the zodiac constellation sets provide the energy patterns within us. This is what the Emerald Tablet provides us" That which is above is from that which is below, and that which is below is from that which is above, working the miracles of one." This is the physical interpretation of how the body relates in earth and in heaven. A more advanced understanding implies what each Sephiroth provides above reflects to another below. The work of Prometheus Bound has embedded in the description the creation of the subtle body. As Io make the journey through the zodiac she is acquiring a new subtle body with 12 vital centers. "I rushed with manic boundings to the sweet stream of Kerchneia and the fountain of Lerna." The fountain of Lerna is the Krater mixing bowl. This is a southern paranatellon of Leo. When the soul drank from the bowl it will lose its memory of the higher worlds. Lerna is the land of swamp where the water snake called Hydra resides. This describes the vagus nerve as a water snake. The deep or abyss is connected to Carpricorn. There is a lack of observation that prevents any paranatellon to be seen south of this astrological sign. The Sun itself reaches the greatest declination in the southern direction. The portion of the celestial sphere laying unseen in the north is assigned as the abyss. This is under the rule of Capricorn. Such a place is the psychic world. Close your eyes now. Can you observe this world? The chimeric sign represents the reincarnating soul. Opposite to Capricorn can be seen Cancer. The southern paranatellon is the ship. The constellation argo maps to the psychic body. The fish part of Capricorn is the lunar body. Zeus is the world soul. In us Zeus represents the life-energy. This energy allows the functioning of life's processes. The Titans are imprisoned in the place called the body. At birth regulatory functions are necessary not creation. The ability to achieve spiritual freedom requires the individual reader become the conqueror and ruler over your own psychic nature that is in the abyss. Prometheus who is chained to the physical body and represents the spirit self. The intuition knows that a hero that is part flesh and part God will save him. This is Hercules. The sanskrit word Manas (मनस्), is the spirit self. When thinking of the word Prometheus think of the spirit self. The Bowl or Krater constellation along the back of Hydra is the site where the soul and matter first meet. The concept of oblivion is actually when matter enters into the recesses of the soul. A mixing of matter with soul occurs. This is why the Krater in Greek is described as a mixing bowl. When the souls enter the bowl they experience their first event of intoxication since they have left the spiritual world. As the soul moves from one planet world to the next a new piece of clothing is contributed as a gift. In the case of the sub lunar world a luminous body is presented. Being drunk little can be remembered. It is up to the student to make the path of return. Further Reading Prometheus Bound (Προμηθεὺς Δεσμώτης) text The second tarot key is labelled with the hebrew letter (ב) pronounced as Gimel. The letter has an unusual appearance. It is described as a camel. The shape is a conformation of the body to utter a sound when joining the higher triangle to the lower triangles. The process of the silver star allows a way to cross the abyss from the soul. The lower ego intelligence is a starting point. This conscious state is represented by the 6th sephira and is called Beauty or Adornment. It is pronounced as (Tiphareth, Tiferet) and written in hebrew as (תִּפְאֶרֶת). The actual path is number 13. This state is called the Uniting Intelligence, and it is named thus because it is itself the Essence of Glory. To ponder the meaning. Consider that this path is the Consumation of the Truth of individual spiritual things. We are approaching the potential from the ethical. In so doing the camel can be of use to us. The center image of the High Priestess actually holds the answer for how to make this journey. This path leads to the ability to carry out the thought forms of the universe. It is interesting that this description does not speak of falling but of traversing a path. The path of the abyss implies a topology. Writers refer to the abyss as a reflection. It is a special type of reflection where the image inverts itself. The sphere marking the center is used to show how the triangles change their orientation with respect to each other. The silver sphere is called the center of inversion, or it is described as an inversion center. Upon examination of the two triangles above we observe how the abyss changes the orientation. A triangle of fire can become a triangle of water. A triangle of air can become a triangle of earth. An orientation of a triangle should be of concern when studying the mind. What are your priorities? What do you value less. Who are you? These can be assigned to the lines and points of the (vertices). How would our personality change if the triangle was in a different orientation. A Lesson from an Akkadian cuneiform tablet In the Babylon Mystery the role of the bird and the Krater play very important parts. Out of the Krater arrives the children given birth by Tiamut (Tiamat). The source of life comes from the living souls infused into the child by their heavenly mother. This is the storm bird Hu Khu. The conceiving mother is called the abyss. Source: The Ruling Races of Prehistoric Times by J. F. Hewitt, published 1894 The abyss contains the Sea of Brass. This is a reference to the souls. The reason for this can be understood by the shape of the foetus (fetus) it can be represented by the number 9. This is why the number is referred to as the seminal soul. Both the shining one and the word used in situ the serpent can be represented by a 9. The hebrew word for brass (נְחָשׁ) [Nechash] and serpent (נָחָשׁ) [Nachash] have similar sound when pronounced. In J. R. R. Tolkien's Two Towers we are told by Gandalf that he changed from Grey to White as the result of returning from the abyss. The Tincture or color describes personality. The psychic world is described to be inhabited with entities. This borderland region is just as important as other parts. Spiritual independence requires this region. There is often talk of freedom and seeking independence. There is no discussion that the source for these words exist in the execution of attaching the head to the body. The worlds of the logos when combined with the seven pillars below require applying glue to the abyss. This prevents separation. The various faces in the photo above mirror the higher worlds. It is their reflections that gaze back at them. This must be realized. Nothing is foreign.
